While people continue to recover from the aftermath of Friday’s tornado, meteorologists are warning citizens about more possible severe weather on Monday.
Wichita and surrounding cities in southern Kansas could experience thunderstorms and possible tornadoes starting Monday afternoon.
“It looks like we’re going to have another pretty powerful system moving through,” National Weather Service meteorologist Kevin Darmofal said. “At this time indications are that it could take a slightly southern track.
“It looks like at least southern Kansas like from, you know, the Wichita area southward into Northern Oklahoma, will be at risk for potential severe weather and tornadoes again on Monday afternoon and early evening.”
Darmofal said that while a lot is still unknown, it could become very similar to Friday’s events.
“You know, can’t get too specific, but at least right now … there is potential we could be around severe weather again and possible storms with large hail and tornadoes,” Darmofal said.
Retired KSN chief meteorologist Mike Smith said that living in the tornado alley, surrounding cities have been lucky in recent years to not have had to worry about tornadoes.
“I want people to remember that eventually the law of averages catches up with you and we’ve been very lucky and very fortunate in recent years to not have any tornadoes,” Smith said. “It may be that things are going to even out. Let’s keep an eye on the weather on Monday.”
Smith said that tornado season isn’t over yet.
