Four people injured in Friday’s tornado remain hospitalized at Ascension Via Christi on Sunday, including one in critical condition.
“We had six but two of them were treated and released,” said Joye Mock, RN house supervisor at Ascension St. Francis Hospital.
A hospital spokesperson said staff were not authorized to provide information about patients’ injuries beyond a one-word status update.
Of the four remaining patients, two are in fair condition, one is in serious condition and one is in critical condition.
Five of the six patients treated at St. Francis were from Sedgwick County and the other lives near Salina.
Officials have said an area in Sedgwick County where the tornado first touched down sustained the most serious damage.
County Commissioner Pete Meitzner said Saturday that one Sedgwick County woman who was buried in debris suffered a broken back. It’s not known what condition the woman is currently in.
Mock said the patient in serious condition is improving from Saturday.
“Yesterday, I had her as critical and she’s doing better, so I’m upgrading her to serious,” Mock said.
“The one that’s critical had more injuries.”
According to Johns Hopkins, the vital signs of patients in critical condition are “unstable and not within normal limits.”
A patient in serious condition is acutely ill with “questionable” indicators.
A spokesperson for Wesley hospital did not respond to an inquiry Sunday about patients with tornado injuries.
