If you were affected by the tornado that hit Friday night, United Way of the Plains will be in Andover this week to help.
Volunteers from the nonprofit have set up a disaster assistance center at the Andover Community Center, 1008 E. 13th St., to provide residents with water, snacks and other supplies. The assistance center will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Sunday, May 8.
Other nonprofits and charities on site will include Red Cross, Salvation Army, Goodwill, Catholic Charities and United Methodist, said Mark Stump, director of direct services for United Way.
“These are other organizations that people might not think about in the disaster world, but we’re just thankful that we’re going to get more help for the people of Andover,” Stump said.
Those needing assistance with shelter, basic needs or cleanup can also dial 211 to find resources.
United Way is also taking donations; a disaster relief fund is available on online. Those who want to offer in-kind donations can call that same number. United Way says it is working with local and state agencies to determine what items are needed.
Stump says United Way has received water, snacks, hand sanitizer, wheel barrows, rakes and shovels from major retailers, Sam’s Club and Lowe’s.
