Shelter dogs ‘become best buds’ as they wait over 100 days for homes in Kansas
Two long-term residents at a Kansas animal shelter may have arrived separately, but they have since “become best buds” as they wait for someone to take them home.
Lizzy and Candy Corn have each spent more than 100 days at Helping Hands Humane Society in Topeka, the shelter said in a June 11 Facebook post. During that time, they’ve become a “play pair” that gets to spend time playing out in the yard together.
“We know their time to get out, run, and have fun with volunteers is a huge highlight for these pups!” shelter staff said.
Lizzy, formerly Blizzard, came to the shelter in February and is believed to be about 3.5 years old. She’s likely a mix of Australian cattle dog and pit bull.
“Lizzy loves to play!” shelter staff said. “She is a fan of the ‘rough and rowdy’ play style and isn’t afraid to get silly. She even makes hilarious snorty, vocal noises when she’s having a blast — she just has a lot to say about how much fun she’s having!”
She’s known to have “magnificent herding instincts and a natural drive to chase,” so she should go to a home free of cats, chickens, rabbits and small children.
Candy Corn first arrived around Halloween and his since come back two more times. He’s believed to be an 8-year-old Australian cattle dog/terrier mix.
“We are really hoping the third time is the charm for this sweet old soul,” staff said. “The first two times he came in as a stray, and this last time he was returned from adoption after his herding breed instincts started shining through. Apparently tiny running humans and cats look suspiciously like ‘things that need organized immediately.’”
Shelter staff say he’s a fun, vocal dog who still needs help working on his “inside voice.” He craves “connection, playtime, and someone willing to appreciate his wonderfully weird little self. “
Both dogs are available for adoption as of June 12.
