A Wichita woman will serve more than three years in prison for dragging a Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office deputy with a car during a traffic stop this spring.
Nevaeh Ann Thompson, 22, was sentenced Tuesday to 45 months.
“The Court followed the recommendations of the State,” Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Lyndsee Stover said. Sedgwick County District Judge Christopher Magana denied a request for leniency from Thompson’s lawyer, who argued that she deserved probation because she quickly pled guilty, is determined to get sober and realizes her actions have consequences, court records show.
Thompson dragged Deputy Grant Keller with a Kia Nitro around 3 a.m. on March 2 after he pulled her over in the 600 block of South Rock Road, her arrest affidavit says. The deputy asked her to step out of the car so he could check for warrants after she told him she didn’t have a driver’s license, according to the affidavit.
After she told the deputy she might have an outstanding arrest warrant, she lunged into the car and tried to drive off. Keller reached into the Kia to try to stop her from fleeing and was dragged 20 to 30 feet when she accelerated, the affidavit says.
He suffered minor injuries, including bruising on his arm and pain in his ankle and back.
When Thompson was arrested on March 7, she told law enforcement she made an impulsive decision out of fear because the deputy “jumped into my car,” the affidavit says.
She pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer on May 2, two months after Keller was hurt.
