Two injured in six-vehicle crash in north Wichita; traffic cone knocked into road
Two people were injured in a six-vehicle crash Friday morning on K-254 in north Wichita, the Kansas Highway Patrol said.
A 57-year-old Augusta woman driving a 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer was taken to Wesley Medical Center with suspected serious injuries and a 54-year-old Wichita man driving a 2010 Toyota Corolla was taken to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis with suspected minor injuries. A 73-year-old Wichita man driving a 2020 Dodge Ram also went to the hospital but a trooper wrote in a crash report that he had no apparent injury.
The crash happened at 9:40 a.m. on westbound K-254 over 45th Street North after at least one cone in a work zone was knocked into the road, according to the report.
“An oversized load knocked down several cones in the work zone,” the trooper wrote. “At least one of the cones came to rest in the left lane.”
Five drivers slowed to avoid the cone in the road, the trooper wrote, but a 58-year-old Kechi man driving a 2005 Dodge Ram and pulling a trailer could not stop in time, the trooper wrote.
He struck the rear of the Corolla, which pushed it into the right lane. The 2005 Ram then struck the rear of the Trailblazer, pushing it into the rear of the 2020 Ram driven by the 73-year-old man.
That Ram then hit the rear of a 2024 Ford F-250 driven by a 54-year-old El Dorado man whose vehicle hit the rear of a 2013 Ford F-150 driven by a 27-year-old Houston, Texas, man.
