Man killed in grain bin accident was 37-year-old from Newton, authorities say

Authorities say the man who died in a farming accident Saturday afternoon in Harvey County was 37-year-old Mark Klaassen of Newton.

The Harvey County Sheriff’s Office said Klaassen “was shifting soybeans Saturday inside a grain bin on a farm in the 2100 block of South Spencer Road” when the “contents suddenly shifted, trapping and injuring” him.

He died at the scene.

Klaassen was one of three men working to level and empty soybeans from the grain bin when the accident happened. Emergency responders were sent to the farm, southeast of Newton, around 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

The other men escaped without any injuries, said Kyle McCaskey, Harvey County’s public information officer.

“The death was ruled accidental,” McCaskey said.
