Varsity Kansas has introduced a new series, Moment of the Year. The series will highlight the top moment or performance from the 2017-18 high school sports season for each of the Wichita-area schools. And now, the Collegiate Spartans.

He finally found his payoff.

Collegiate High runner Lakelin Conrad jumped onto the Kansas distance scene as a freshman in 2014. He won the boys Class 3A cross country meet and the 3,200 meters on the track. But Collegiate moved up to 4A, and Conrad had trouble reaching the pinnacle again.

As a senior in 2017-18, he swept the competition.

Conrad won the 4A cross country meet, and the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs at the state track and field meet to finish his high school career with six individual state championships and three on his last try.

He cross the line for his second straight (and third overall) cross country title at 16:19.5, more than 3.5 seconds ahead of the runner-up.

In the 1,600 meters, he finished in 4:20.13, and he won the 3,200 meters in 9:35.15. Conrad hadn't won a state track title since his freshman season when he won the 3,200 in 9:58.88.

Conrad has committed to run at TCU in the fall.
