Confrontation with a gun turns deadly. Now Wichita man sentenced to prison
A 28-year-old man has been ordered to serve more than two years in prison for gun crimes connected to an argument and deadly shooting in west Wichita last summer.
Elijah Donte Fanning of Wichita pleaded guilty in March to one count of criminal discharge of a firearm and one count of criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. Sedgwick County District Judge Christopher Magana sentenced him on Tuesday to 25 months in prison, according to court records and the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.
Wichita police have said 26-year-old Nicholas Alexander died on June 29, 2025, after he was shot in the back during an argument with four men at a house near Meridian and West Street. Witness accounts included in a probable cause affidavit indicate the argument may have started after Alexander went to the home with a gun to confront another man over “messing with his girl.” A vehicle was also shot at that afternoon, the affidavit says.
The shooting was reported to police around 2:30 p.m. in the 2700 block of West Second Street. Alexander died after he was taken to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital.
