A 30-year-old Wichita man was sentenced Friday to more than 49 years in prison for killing his mother-in-law in front of his 8-year-old son at a mobile home park near Derby last year.

Sedgwick County District Judge Tyler Roush ordered Stephen Rogers to serve 586 months for second-degree murder and six months for aggravated endangering a child, according to Lyndsee Stover, spokeswoman for the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office. Rogers pleaded guilty on Feb. 27.

Sharmaine Marlene Burke, 49, called 911 around 11:30 p.m. on July 30, 2025, after Rogers threatened to shoot her in the head while he was drunk, The Eagle previously reported. He killed her while she was on the phone with a dispatcher.

The shooting happened at the Longbranch Mobile Home Community, 9600 E. 47th St. South.
