Man, 27, dead after Wichita police-involved shooting following mental health call
Wichita police say a 27-year-old man is dead after an officer-involved shooting Monday outside of a home near Pawnee and Seneca.
Capt. Aaron Moses said police and mental health co-responders went to the home after the man’s family called 911 because he threatened to commit suicide and had access to firearms. The man and one Wichita police officer each fired a gun, Moses said.
It wasn’t clear Monday where the man was aiming when he fired or which shot was fatal.
The officer has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation of the shooting by the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, Moses said.
Police officers, including those with crisis intervention training, and the mental health co-responders arrived at the house, in the 1400 block of West Haskell, around 3:30 p.m. on Monday. Moses said they initially tried to contact the man by phone and went toward the house when he didn’t pick up their call.
When police approached the house, they saw the man sitting in a truck in the driveway, Moses said.
“As one of the officers approached the driver’s side window, a gunshot was fired from inside the vehicle,” Moses said. “One WPD officer then fired their weapon toward the vehicle while taking cover.”
Moses said police officers immediately took “life-saving measures,” but the man died on site. His name was not immediately released.
No one else was hurt.
