Wichita woman fatally shot was Marine, organ donor. Estranged husband charged with murder
A 25-year-old Wichita woman shot at an apartment complex last week died on Monday, leading to the arrest of her estranged husband, the Wichita Police Department said.
Ivy Unruh, 25, was separated from her husband, 29-year-old Joshua Orlando, when the shooting was reported shortly after 8 a.m. Friday.
When police arrived at The Remington Apartments at 7272 E. 37th St. North, they found Unruh near one of the complex’s buildings, a police news release says. She had been shot in the upper body and was taken to a hospital “in grave condition.”
Police found a firearm and Orlando at the scene. Orlando was taken into custody by police and was later booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of aggravated battery, the release says.
After Unruh died, Orlando was rebooked on suspicion of murder, police said. He has been formally charged with one count of premeditated first-degree murder and remains in custody, according to the release.
According to a GoFundMe created by a family friend, Unruh was a Marine who “served her country with honor, strength, and selflessness.” But beyond that, the fundraiser continued, she was “a daughter, a sister, and a friend who brought light into the lives of others.”
“She had the courage to walk away from a dangerous situation, yet tragically, her life was still taken,” the fundraiser summary read.
Unruh was also an organ donor, an update from the family said, and as a result saved six other lives upon her death.
The family is accepting donations to help cover funeral and memorial expenses; as of Tueday evening, the fundraiser had reached more than $9,000 of its $11,000 goal.
Unruh will have a funeral in Kansas, as well as space in Fort Huachuca, Arizona, beside her uncle and grandparents, the GoFundMe update said. It can be found online at https://shorturl.at/LbXkT
Orlando made his first appearance in Sedgwick County District Court on Tuesday, court records show. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on May 5.
