A Wichita man has been ordered to serve at least 74 years in prison for killing his pregnant girlfriend a few weeks before her due date last year., according to a spokeswoman for the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.

Matthew Criscenzo, 20, was found guilty at trial of first-degree murder, kidnapping and aggravated battery in the May 25, 2025, shooting death of 20-year-old Naomi Oglesby. Oglesby was 37 weeks pregnant with their child when Criscenzo shot her in the head during a fight at his father’s house, in the 700 block of South Laura.

He told police he “didn’t want” and “didn’t mean” to shoot her but “thought she was gonna leave me,” court records show.

Criscenzo contended the shooting was accidental, that he didn’t think his finger was on the trigger and that the gun went off when Oglesby pushed him away from her.

But witnesses testified that Criscenzo had physically abused her multiple times before her death, court records say.

Oglesby’s baby, a girl, was delivered at a Wichita hospital via an emergency C-section shortly before Oglesby was pronounced dead. But the infant was diagnosed with severe brain trauma from not getting enough oxygen in utero after her mother was shot.

Criscenzo was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison with no parole for at least 618 months on the murder count, plus an additional 271 months total for his kidnapping and aggravated battery convictions, DA spokeswoman Mandi McCurdy said by email. He won’t start serving the 271-month portion of the sentence unless he’s granted parole from the life sentence, she said.
