Authorities on Monday arrested a 37-year-old Wichita man in connection with a deadly shooting over the weekend in Haysville.
Jesse Dean Rau, 43, of Haysville, died Sunday at an area hospital where he had been taken for treatment, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. Authorities found Rau suffering from a gunshot wound around 3 a.m. Sunday after 911 “received an automated crash detection alert from a mobile device” in the 7700 block of South Broadway.
“Haysville Police officers, along with Sedgwick County EMS and Fire District 1, responded and located an SUV that had crashed into a tree,” the release says.
Rau was critically wounded inside the vehicle. A female passenger also had injuries.
“Based on the preliminary investigation, detectives believe at least three individuals were inside the SUV when a disturbance occurred, during which Rau was shot by another occupant,” the release says. “The SUV then left the roadway and struck a tree.”
The suspected shooter ran away after the crash, authorities said.
Deputies with the sheriff’s office warrant section on Monday found the suspect at an apartment complex in the 7100 block of West Shade Lane, near Central and Ridge Road in Wichita. Sheriff Jeff Easter said the man surrendered peacefully after a short standoff with members of the SWAT team.
The man was arrested at 5:40 p.m. Monday, the sheriff’s office said.
Residents of the area who had been asked to evacuate during the standoff were allowed to return to their homes Monday, the sheriff’s office said.
