A 48-year-old Mulvane man died Tuesday after he was hit by a car during a rainstorm.

Authorities say George E. Shaw III slipped and fell in the road while he was walking across Hydraulic after turning off power to an irrigation pivot. Shaw had stopped his vehicle in the 10600 block of South Hydraulic, near 103rd Street, to complete the task.

After he fell in the road, a Mazda 6 driven by a 55-year-old Wellington man struck him, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Wednesday.

The collision was reported at 3:43 p.m. Tuesday.

“At the time of the collision, witnesses reported heavy rain and reduced visibility,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

First responders found Shaw unresponsive at the scene. He died there.

The Mazda ended up in a ditch and field after the collision. The driver was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

“Investigators do not believe impairment played a role in the crash,” the news release says.
