Kansans with kids in school can visit these attractions for free this summer
If you are a Kansas resident with kids in school (pre-K through 12th grade), you can visit more than 230 “must-see attractions” for free this summer.
You and your kids can access many museums, historic sites, zoos, state parks and more through this year’s shortened edition of Sunflower Summer, a program offered by Kansas Tourism and the Kansas Department of Commerce.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Sunflower Summer back so that Kansas families can really experience their home state in an entirely new way,” Kansas Tourism Director Bridgette Jobe said. “From iconic attractions to our hidden gems, this year truly showcases the depth and diversity of experiences across the state.”
Here’s everything you need to know to take advantage of Sunflower Summer.
When is the Sunflower Summer program?
The 2026 Sunflower Summer program will run from July 9 through Aug. 2.
This is similar to the 2025 program, which was significantly shortened due to budget cuts.
“This program relies on funding from the Kansas State Legislature to operate,” Kansas Tourism says. “The amount approved for this summer’s program only allows for a shortened timeline. Please note that we may have to adjust the length of the program based on the amount of use.”
Who can use the Sunflower Summer tickets?
All Kansas students from pre-K through high school are automatically included in the program, regardless of if they are in public, private or home school programs.
One adult may accompany their students with a free ticket voucher. Other adults in the family must pay standard admission costs. This change was made by the state legislature in 2025.
“Users will still be able to transfer student tickets to other trusted Kansas residents via the app (ex. transferring to grandparents or daycare providers), but only one adult admission will be covered by the program,” officials said.
What attractions are available for free this summer?
A full list of participating attractions can be found at sunflowersummer.org.
“This year’s lineup of attractions features activities in every region of Kansas, offering opportunities to explore the state’s rich history, vibrant arts scene, unique natural landscapes and family-friendly destinations,” the Kansas Department of Commerce said in a news release.
The more than 230 attractions include Wichita’s Exploration Place, Manhattan’s Flint Hills Discovery Center, Topeka’s Kansas Children’s Discovery Center and Salina’s Rolling Hills Zoo.
The program allows students to visit every attraction one time for free over the course of the summer, and you can go to as many different attractions as you would like each day.
“Please remember that users are only to claim tickets to an attraction once per season, so make sure you plan your road trips wisely!” Kansas Tourism says.
How do I claim Sunflower Summer tickets?
To claim your tickets, you’ll need to download the Sunflower Summer app, available on Apple and Android devices.
You will then be prompted to create an account, which will allow you to claim tickets for free.
If you do not have a smartphone, you can request a paper voucher on site at staffed attractions.
