One of America’s most charming main streets is in Kansas. What makes it special?
Ten charming main streets across America were recently named the country’s best by USA Today.
“Main streets across the United States are experiencing a renaissance. Once abandoned and boarded up as people shifted to the suburbs, these iconic thoroughfares are now thriving,” USA Today editors wrote when publishing the annual 10Best list. “These 10 places with charming main streets — nominated by an expert panel and voted by readers as the best in the U.S. — offer more than just a road; these streets are living history, have a vibrant culture, and serve as the hearts of their communities.”
One of those main streets is in Kansas.
Emporia has the third best main street in the U.S., according to the 2026 rankings.
What makes Emporia’s main street special?
“Whether you’re looking for unique shopping, mouthwatering dining, or a lively night out, Commercial Street in downtown Emporia is the place to be,” USA Today said. “Stroll through the charming historic district, where you’ll find one-of-a-kind antique shops, a gourmet chocolate shop, a local brewery, cozy coffee spots, and lively bars and restaurants serving everything from authentic Mexican cuisine to smoky BBQ, artisan pizza, and handcrafted sandwiches.
“It’s also the heart of the community, hosting events that bring people together, from parades and festivals to sporting events and celebrations.”
Visit Emporia, the town’s destination marketing organization, describes Commercial Street as “the bustling heart of the city.”
The walkable 9-block area is just south of Emporia State University and was named a national historic district in 2012, according to Emporia Main Street.
What to do in Emporia, KS
Favorite attractions include the Imaginarium STEM education center, the historic 1929 Spanish Colonial Revival theatre and the town arts center.
There is also a wide range of places to eat — offering everything from bars, grills and coffee shops to Mexican, Asian and barbecue — and locally-owned downtown shops.
Downtown Emporia hosts over 40 events each year. Upcoming events include the Kansas Shrine Bowl, Emporia First Friday Art Walk and the Great American Market.
The main street of Emporia has been named among the best in the U.S. every year since 2024.
Emporia is about 90 miles northeast of Wichita.
