This ice cream shop was named the best in Kansas. See why customers love it
About a week before the first day of summer, a major food and drink site named the best ice cream shop in every state.
In Kansas, that recognition from Tasting Table went to Sylas and Maddy’s Homemade Ice Cream.
The ice cream shop has two locations, the original spot that opened in Lawrence in 1997 and a second store that opened in Olathe in 1999.
“From the very first days of existence up until now, this KC favorite has been a family owned and operated business!” Sylas and Maddy’s says. “We started when our daughters were young and now they are grown with their own families. All 3 families help to operate the stores.”
To determine the best ice cream shop in Kansas and all other U.S. states, Tasting Table said it looked for businesses with “stellar online reviews” that highlighted quality, ambiance and customer service. The food and drink media company said it gave extra attention to ice cream shops that have received local or national awards, but previous recognition wasn’t a requirement to be considered.
“We stuck to shops that serve ice cream in this article, forgoing ones that primarily serve gelato or custard,” Tasting Table continued. “While shops serving homemade ice cream earned extra kudos, this attribute was likewise not a dealbreaker. Finally, small, regional chains were allowed, but not major ones with locations across the country.”
What customers love about Sylas and Maddy’s
“Customers say that the pie flavors are particularly noteworthy,” Tasting Table wrote. “In fact, one Yelper scored the pumpkin and apple pie ice creams among the top three flavors at this shop, beating dozens of other flavors they had sampled over the years.”
The Sylas and Maddy’s menu says the shop always has 40 flavors to choose from — and they even sell 5-flavor samplers, which consist of 5 mini scoops of ice cream in a cup or their homemade waffle cones.
“I ended up going with the 5 flavor sampler in a waffle cone,” one Google reviewer wrote. “Loved all my choices, especially the red velvet. They added a chocolate malt ball at the bottom of the cone to prevent spill from the bottom, genius!”
