Wichita may finally be getting its Cheesecake Factory after years of wishing

Wichita’s collective restaurant wish for at least two decades has been that the city would get a Cheesecake Factory.

Now, it appears that it finally will.

A building application just filed with the Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department says that the restaurant chain plans to build at 2020 N. Rock Road on the site where Outback Steakhouse once operated. That restaurant closed and the building was torn down in 2022.

A permit has been filed to build a Cheesecake Factory in Bradley Fair.

No one from Bradley Fair immediately returned messages on Monday morning. The declared value of the build is $3 million, according to the permit, which reads, “The scope of work is for the construction of a new one-story steel frame structure with the tenant fit-out for a new restaurant, bar, patio dining and a commercial kitchen.”

We are trying to reach The Cheesecake Factory’s corporate office and will update this story with any new information.

Wichita diners have long voiced their desire for a Cheesecake Factory, which has restaurants in Overland Park, at Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza and at Woodland Hills Mall in Tulsa.

The chain was founded in 1978 in Calabasas Hills, California, and today has about 217 restaurants. It offers a massive, multi-page menu filled with nearly 250 dishes. It also serves a long list of cheesecake flavors by the slice.

Its presence has been so desired by Wichitans that it has become common for people to post on April 1 — April Fool’s Day — that the restaurant is coming to town.

Today, however, is Oct. 27.
