So many west-Wichita donut shops are opening, starting next week with this one:
Late last week, I reported that SK Donut — which has shops in Haysville, Arkansas City and Park City— would soon be taking over the old Knolla’s Pizza building at Central and Ridge.
It turns out, that was just the beginning of the doughnut news. Since then, I’ve learned about the impending openings of two (and possibly three) more doughnut shops.
They are:
Parlor Doughnuts, 7010 W. 21st St.: This doughnut chain’s local franchisees announced more than a year ago that they were bringing a shop to Wichita. Now, they have an opening date: Saturday, Oct. 25.
Parlor, which is taking over the former Hurts Donut space on West 21st Street, serves layered doughnuts — doughnut-meets-croissant creations more commonly known by the trademarked word “cronut” — as well as coffee drinks and breakfast items such as acai bowls, avocado toast, breakfast tacos and breakfast sandwiches.
The shop will have a drive-through and space for dine-in customers. The franchisees have said in the past that they plan to eventually open three Parlor Doughnuts in the Wichita area.
Their franchise agreement requires them to open their second shop within nine months of the first one opening, and though the group of local franchisees was initially planning its second store for College Hill or a near-Wichita suburb, partner Byron Smith said that they’ve now decided to open their store No. 2 in Tallahassee.
“Store number two for Wichita is up in the air,” he said. “We have had some opportunities pushed our way, but we will look more at them once we’re up and rolling with Parlor west.”
Parlor Doughnut’s hours will be 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily.
Crispy Donuts 2110 N. Maize Road, suite 100: This regional doughnut chain entered the Wichita market in February 2023, when it took over the old Taco Tico building at 460 N. West St.
Since then, its owner has also opened shops in the former Chick’n Pop building at 3233 E. Harry and at 2401 W. Central in El Dorado.
Now, the owner is working on a Crispy Donuts for northwest Wichita. Lee Kang says that the next location should be open by the end of this month in a strip center at 2110 N. Maize Road. The doughnut shop will move into a space on the end of the strip center that over the years has been home to a string of fast-Mexican food restaurants, most recently David’s Express.
Kang also has Crispy Donuts shops in Dodge City, Garden City and Hugoton, and he said this week that he might not be done with Wichita yet: He could open a shop on the northeast side next year, he said.
Crispy Donuts serves standard raised and cake doughnuts plus mochi doughnuts, cronuts, baked cinnamon rolls, bagels and breakfast sandwiches. It also serves coffee and cappuccino, as well as smoothies and Thai iced tea.
