Another Wichita business has started serving adult beverages from the drive-thru
The staff of Just a Sip — a local dirty soda concept that has three addresses in Wichita — would frequently hear from customers that they liked to take their drinks home and add a little vodka to them.
That gave owner Derek Sorrells an idea.
On Wednesday, the Just a Sip shops at 3801 N. Ridge, 8520 W. 13th St. and 2126 N. Webb in Wichita all started offering spiked dirty sodas. Now, customers can drive through and pick up their favorite soda combinations spiked with vodka, rum, whiskey, tequila or Irish cream. It adds $3 to the price of the drink.
“We had many people ask for it,” Sorrells said. “So as a drink shop, it just made sense to add adult drinks.”
Sorrells opened his first Just a Sip shop at 13th and Tyler in 2023 offering the type of dirty soda drinks that had become trendy across the country. The drinks blend sodas with sweet syrups, fresh fruit and fruit purees and can be customized to individual tastes.
After that, he added two co-branded Just a Sip/Papa’s Ice Cream & Treats shops, first at 21st and Webb and then last year at 37th and Ridge.
As Spangles customers know, Kansas began allowing drive-through and carry-out cocktail service during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the new rule stuck after the pandemic ended. Ever since, Spangles has been serving margaritas, tequila sunrises and screwdriver slushes at its local restaurants, and the owners of a new restaurant called Different Type of Flava are planning to start serving drive-through daiquiris, too.
Now, Just a Sip is joining in. Customers will be able to spike drinks from their regular drink menu with any of the available alcohols. Just a Sip also serves coffee for those who want an Irish coffee to go.
All three Just a Sip stores are now offering a limited-time special: Customers can get 16-ounce margaritas for $2.99.
Also, Sorrells said, anyone who hasn’t tried dirty soda yet can take advantage of another special he’s offering from 1 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, when the 37th and Ridge location will be offering free non-alcoholic drinks.
