Freddy’s is adding its first Wichita-area restaurant in more than three years
Restaurant news just keeps coming out of Andover. The latest bit of information: Residents of the Wichita suburb will soon no longer have to drive to Wichita for a Freddy’s fix.
Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers public relations manager Kim Huynh confirmed on Monday that the company plans to add a new Freddy’s at 646 E. Cloud Ave. in Andover. The site is part of a new strip center near the Dillons at Kellogg and Andover Road — and it’s just down the street from the new Chipotle going up at 520 E. Cloud.
Freddy’s is now in the architectural and design phase of the restaurant, Huynh said, and it is still working on obtaining state and local permits. But barring any delays, the new Freddy’s should be open by the end of the year.
Though Freddy’s has restaurants in other near-Wichita towns, including Derby, El Dorado and Newton, until now, Andover has not had one — though the restaurants at K-96 and Greenwich and at Rock and Central in Wichita aren’t too far away.
The new Freddy’s will be on the end cap in the new center — which is also scheduled to have a dentists’ office move in this fall — and the new restaurant will have a drive through.
It’s been a few years since the Wichita area got a new Freddy’s. The newest one opened at 21st and Amidon in 2022. Newton got its at 520 E. 14th St. in 2021.
More new Freddy’s restaurants could be on the way, Huynh said.
“We’re also actively looking around the metro area for potential sites, but don’t have any additional confirmed locations for now,” she said.
Freddy’s, which was founded and is based in Wichita, now has 559 locations. Its first Canada restaurant opened last week in Winnipeg.
Meanwhile, it appears that construction is underway on the site where Andover’s first Chipotle should open. Though the restaurant chain has yet to confirm its plans for Andover, the city’s Site Plan Review Committee in February approved a plan to add a Chipotle on the site. According to the meeting minutes, the restaurant will have a Chipotlane pickup window.
On Monday, a Chipotle spokesperson did not confirm that address for Andover’s restaurant but did say it should be open sometime this fall.
