A new seafood chain opening in Wichita this week serves the biggest shrimp, owner says
They first started teasing their impending Wichita arrival in the fall.
Now, Sam’s Southern Eatery is just about to open. Its first day in business at 6600 W. Central — the former Marco’s Cantina space — will be Wednesday.
The restaurant is part of a chain that originated in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 2008. It’s a sit-down place that serves things like catfish, shrimp, fried green tomatoes, fried pickles and Po’ Boy sandwiches. Customers also can get crab cakes, fish platters and chicken wings.
Chris Chaudhry, who is opening the restaurant in Wichita, said that Sam’s is known for its big shrimp — “the biggest in any franchise,” he said. Customers also love the catfish, which he described as having no smell and no fishy aftertaste.
“It’s very smooth and very delicious,” he said.
The restaurant has about 49 different items on its menu, but it doesn’t serve alcohol. Its hours will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
The owners have been working on a remodel of the former Marco’s space for months. It ever-so-briefly was home to Pueblo Viejo Family Mexican Restaurant, which operated out of the space for just a couple of months.
Sam’s owners have promised to send me the menu later today, and I’ll attach it to this post when they do.
