Two Wichita restaurants that opened a half mile apart this summer are now both closed
Two Wichita Mexican restaurants that opened across the street from each other in July are now both closed, neither making it past four months.
The latest to close is Los Cabos Mexican Grill, the restaurant Juan Lopez and his family opened in the Crossroads Shopping Center at 7011 W. Central.
The family closed the restaurant a week ago, Lopez said. There just wasn’t enough traffic at the spot and it was “slow from the beginning.” He hasn’t ruled out opening another restaurant somewhere else in Wichita in the future.
Lopez’s family has about 13 Mexican restaurants across the region — including in El Dorado, Park City, Hays and Pratt.
Los Cabos survived a few months longer than Pueblo Viejo Family Mexican Restaurant, which opened a week earlier and just a half a mile up the road at 6600 W. Central. It was closed by September, though I never heard back from the owners about their decision to close their doors so quickly.
Now, a new restaurant is preparing to move into that space, which previously had been home to Marcos Cantina for 34 years. Sam’s Southern Eatery, a full service chain serving things like catfish, shrimp, fried green tomatoes, fried pickles and Po’ Boy sandwiches, should open there soon.
Chris Chaudhry, one of the owners of Sam’s Southern Eatery, said that he hopes to have it ready to go before Christmas. If he can’t be ready by then, he’ll push the opening to February, he said.
