Three Wichita restaurants that opened while you were away for Thanksgiving

If you’re not still too stuffed from all that Thanksgiving feasting, Wichita has some new places for you to visit.

Here are three eateries that opened while you were busy with Thanksgiving prep and cleanup.

Chick N Max, 352 S. West St.: Today is the official opening day for this new Wichita Chick N Max even though the restaurant was open for limited hours over the weekend. The locally owned restaurant chain has taken over the old Moo-Yah space, which had been vacant since 2016.

The store is a replacement for the original Chick N Max restaurant, which opened in January 2018 at 410 N. Hillside but closed in October. Owner Max Sheets said he preferred the West Street space because it has a drive-through window. Its hours are 10:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. daily.

Sheets has two other Chick N Max stores — one at 2530 N. Greenwich, which opened in April 2018, and another at 3520 N. Maize Road, which opened in January of this year.

Weirdough Bakery, 7130 W. Maple: Self-proclaimed weirdo Erica Fowler is celebrating the official opening day of her new bakery today in the space that Smallcakes Cupcakery vacated last year. It’s in the corner of the strip center at Maple and Ridge that also has Chipotle, McAlister’s Deli and Ecclesia Coffee Shop.

The bakery’s name might cause you to think it’s another edible cookie dough business, but it’s not. Fowler’s bakery will specialize in breads, pie and everyday cakes. It also will feature her chocolate chip cookies and cinnamon rolls that are based on her grandmother’s recipe as well as pies in flavors like chocolate silk, rhubarb, pumpkin, pecan and cinnamon apple. Homemade bread, including brioche and nine-grain loaves, also will be available.

Fowler previously worked as the head baker at Headshots Bar & Grill, 2120 N. Woodlawn. The hours will be 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays.

Sorrel’s Jamaican Food, 222 S. Commerce: This Jamaican restaurant just relocated from 3090 W. 13th St. to the old Hungry Heart space, which sits at the northeast corner of Intrust Bank Arena

Owners Sorrel and Christine Rhoden, who reopened in the new spot on Saturday, are serving the same menu of jerk chicken, jerk pork, coco bread, ox tail and other Jamaican specialties that it had on 13th Street, but the new place has a full bar and will be open late on the weekends with live entertainment and DJs.

Their hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays, 11 a.m. to midnight Thursdays, and 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
