Self-proclaimed weirdo is opening Weirdough Bakery in Wichita

A self-proclaimed weirdo is opening a Wichita bakery that will showcase her baking skills.

Erica Fowler says she should have her new Weirdough Bakery open by the first week of December in the space at 7130 W. Maple that Smallcakes Cupcakery vacated last year. It’s in the corner of the strip center at Maple and Ridge that also has Chipotle, McAlister’s Deli and Ecclesia Coffee Shop.

Fowler has baked from her home for the past 10 years, she said, inspired by her grandmother, who died last year.

“My Mennonite grandmother taught me how to bake when I was able to stand next to her, and I’ve always wanted to do it,” Fowler said.

Fowler previously worked as the head baker at Headshots Bar & Grill, 2120 N. Woodlawn, and while she was working there, the restaurant won the Death By Chocolate competition put on every year at Exploration Place.

Weirdough Bakery will specialize in breads, pie and everyday cakes, Fowler said. It also will feature her chocolate chip cookies and cinnamon rolls that are based on her grandmother’s recipe. She’ll also serve pies in flavors like chocolate silk, rhubarb, pumpkin, pecan and cinnamon apple.

Fowler also is known for her homemade bread, especially her brioche and nine-grain loaves, and she’s going to be providing bread to several restaurants and food trucks in town.

She said she’ll have three tables inside the bakery and will sell pie and cake by the slice as well as other individual desserts for people who want to linger. She’ll have coffee, and during the winter, apple cider.

She’s had the name for her shop in mind for while.

“I’m very much a weirdo,” she said with a laugh. “It’s a name I’ve been toying with for the last three or four years, and when I found out it was available, I jumped on it.”

Once it’s ready, the bakery will be open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Fridays and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays.
