A Southern eatery is taking over space where another Wichita restaurant just closed

Recently, I told you about a new Southern restaurant chain that had announced plans to move into Wichita. At the time, they’d only say that they’d secured a space on West Central.

Now I know where exactly. Renovations are already underway in the space at 6600 W. Central where Pueblo Viejo Family Mexican Restaurant just opened in July. For 34 years previous, Marcos Cantina had operated out of the space.

Chris Chaudhry, one of the owners of Sam’s Southern Eatery, said that he hopes to have the restaurant open before Christmas. If they can’t be ready by that date, they’ll push the opening to February. Just after Christmas, he said, is not a good time for restaurants to open.

The old Marco’s Cantina space on West Central, which was home to another Mexican restaurant for just a few months, will soon get a new tenant.

Green Olive, the Mediterranean restaurant that opened in the adjacent space to the east in 2016, will remain open.

It’s not clear when Pueblo Viejo closed, but I have a call in to owner David Perez.

Sam’s Southern Eatery is a chain that originated in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 2008. There are now more than 50 Sam’s Southern Eatery restaurants, most in the southern United States.

It will be a full-service restaurant with a menu that includes things like catfish, shrimp, fried green tomatoes, fried pickles and Po’ Boy sandwiches. Customers also can get crab cakes, fish platters, chicken wings and fried oysters.
