Jurors convict Manuel Rivas in 2013 killing on North Broadway
Jurors took about three hours Friday to convict a Wichita man of killing a 23-year-old during a dispute at a north-side apartment complex in November 2013.
Manuel Rivas, 25, was found guilty of the second-degree murder of Eric Salazar at a fourplex on North Broadway on Nov. 6, 2013. Salazar suffered a gunshot wound to the head during an argument – apparently over money – after two men forced their way into the apartment’s back door shortly after midnight, police have said. He died a few hours later.
When Rivas is sentenced he faces between 165 and 653 months in prison, depending on his criminal history, Dan Dillon, spokesman for the Sedgwick County District Attorney, said by e-mail. That’s just short of 14 years up to nearly 54 1/2 years.
His sentencing date had not been set as of Friday, District Judge Eric Yost, who presided over the trial, said.
Attorneys gave their closing arguments Friday morning, Dillon said. The case was turned over to jurors for deliberation shortly after noon.
They delivered the verdict at about 3:30 p.m., Yost said.
Jeremy Anspach, 38, also is charged with second-degree murder in Salazar’s killing. His jury trial has been moved to June 1. He has pleaded not guilty.
