Man’s murder trial to begin in 2013 fatal shooting sparked by argument

One of two men accused of killing a 23-year-old man at a north-side apartment in November 2013 is scheduled to face a Sedgwick County jury this week.

Manuel Rivas, 25, is charged with second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Eric Salazar at a fourplex on North Broadway on Nov. 6, 2013. Police have said Salazar suffered a gunshot wound to the head during an argument – apparently over money – after two men forced their way into the apartment’s back door shortly after midnight; he died a few hours later.

Several people were in the residence at the time, police have said.

Rivas was arrested a few blocks away later that day and has been jailed in connection with the case since then. He is being held on $500,000 bond.

Jury selection is set to start Monday in Rivas’ trial, according to district court records and Dan Dillon, spokesman for the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office. Attorneys’ opening statements and testimony will follow. District Judge Eric Yost is expected to preside.

Rivas’ defense attorney could not be reached for comment.

Rivas is one of two men charged in connection with Salazar’s death. Jeremy Anspach, 38, is set for jury trial March 16 on a count of second-degree murder.

Both have pleaded not guilty to the charge.
