Police: Fugitive turns gun on himself after shootout and chase

A 26-year-old man wanted on suspicion of murder in Florida was hospitalized after shooting himself while eluding authorities Wednesday, according to Wichita police.

The man, according to police, shot himself in the 400 block of South Hydraulic, just north of Kellogg, shortly before 12:30 p.m.

The man was being sought by U.S. marshals and was engaged in a shootout with marshals outside a house in the 1000 block of South Ellis. With marshals in pursuit, the man then fled with a woman in a two-door Honda before crashing the vehicle into a home in the 600 block of South Ellis, police said.

Both the suspect and the woman left the vehicle on foot before the man turned a gun on himself a few blocks away in the area of South Hydraulic and Kellogg.

Police blocked traffic along South Hydraulic near Kellogg following the incident.

At about 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Officer Charley Davidson of the Wichita Police Department said the man was in critical condition and the woman was still at large. Police did not release the man’s name.

No federal agents or Wichita police officers were injured, Davidson said. As of Wednesday afternoon, Davidson said the woman was “not a suspect at this point.”

Davidson added that Wichita police did not provide assistance in locating the suspect – who was wanted on a murder warrant – but they did assist once the suspect became violent and attempted to flee.
