Varsity Kansas has introduced a new series, Moment of the Year. The series will highlight the top moment or performance from the 2017-18 high school sports season for each of the Wichita-area schools. And now, the Conway Springs Cardinals.

Conway Springs had done it before, but it is no less special each time it happens.

The Cardinals football team completed an undefeated regular season at 9-0 with a season-capping 53-19 victory on senior night. It was the first time the Kansas high school power had gone undefeated since 2013.

Conway Springs couldn't keep its good fortunes rolling into the Class 3A playoffs, losing to Hesston 45-42 in the second round after earning a regional championship against Independent.

The Cardinals' 10 wins were the most since that 2013 season, when they made it to the 3A quarterfinals against Scott City.

During the regular season, Conway Springs had impressive wins against Garden Plain and Cheney. Those teams finished the year with 16 wins combined, but the Cardinals beat Garden Plain 26-6 and Cheney 41-0.

Conway Springs started the season hot, too. Over the first four games of the season, the Cardinals had outscored their opponents 266-18, including scoring 98 against Belle Plaine in the opener.

Per usual, the Cardinals' rushing attack dictated the outcome.

Seniors Trenton Jones and Colton Terhune ran for 3,349 yards and 55 touchdowns. Both averaged more than 10 yards per carry and 100 yards per game.

With the undefeated regular season, Conway Springs came away with the Central Plains League championship, one of the Cardinals' two league titles.
