Blue-green algae warnings for Cheney Lake, Marion Reservoir, Sebelius Reservoir
Cheney Lake still contains high levels of toxic blue-green algae, according to the state.
The lake lies at the intersection of Sedgwick, Kingman and Reno counties.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment also released blue-green algae warnings for Marion Reservoir (but not the lake) in Marion County and Sebelius Reservoir in Norton County.
Blue-green algae generally grows in lakes, ponds and slow-moving streams, especially when the water is warm. The algae often looks like spilled green paint.
The state says boating and fishing are safe on lakes under a warning, but people and pets should avoid contact with the water. The health department said it strongly discourages wading, skiing and swimming in the water.
“Kansans should be aware that blooms are unpredictable,” the department said in a statement. “They can develop rapidly and may float around the lake, requiring visitors to exercise their best judgment.”
