Blue-green algae warnings in Brown, Marion and Rooks counties
High levels of toxic blue-green algae have been detected in three bodies of water around the state, according to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
It generally grows in lakes, ponds and slow-moving streams, especially when the water is warm. The algae often looks like spilled green paint.
The Department of Health and Environment issued a warning for Hiawatha City Lake in Brown County, Marion Reservoir in Marion County and Plainville Township Lake in Rooks County.
The blue-green algae warning was not issued for Marion County Lake.
The statement said boating and fishing are safe on lakes under a warning, but people and pets should avoid contact with the water. The state said it strongly discourages wading, skiing and swimming in the water.
“Kansans should be aware that blooms are unpredictable,” the department said in a statement. “They can develop rapidly and may float around the lake, requiring visitors to exercise their best judgment.”
