Cheney Lake under toxic blue-green algae warning
The state said it’s detected high levels of toxic blue-green algae in Cheney Lake, which lies at the intersection of Sedgwick, Kingman and Reno counties.
The state also it found blue-green algae in the Marion Reservoir (but not the lake) in Marion County, according to a statement from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
Blue-green algae generally grows in lakes, ponds and slow-moving streams, especially when the water is warm. The algae often looks like spilled green paint.
The state says boating and fishing are safe on lakes under a warning, but people and pets should avoid contact with the water. The health department said it strongly discourages wading, skiing and swimming in the water.
“Kansans should be aware that blooms are unpredictable,” the department said in a statement. “They can develop rapidly and may float around the lake, requiring visitors to exercise their best judgment.”
The health state department lifted blue-green algae warnings for two other bodies of water: Hiawatha City Lake in Brown County and Plainville Township Lake in Rooks County.
