Wichita saw 5.5 inches of snow overnight. Here’s how much more is expected today
Wichita saw 5.5 inches of snow overnight, including a couple of hours of heavier snowfall dropping an inch an hour, according to a National Weather Service meteorologist.
“It was coming down pretty good, around 1 a.m. or so,” Wichita-based meteorologist Christian Williams said.
Williams said wind gusts have affected visibility. The strongest gusts measures at Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport were 41 mph at 12:35 a.m. and 40 mph at 2:04 a.m. Visibility was three-quarters of a mile at 7 a.m., he said.
As of around 7:30 a.m., gusts were still reaching between 30 to 35 mph, he said.
He expected possibly another inch of snow throughout the day and into tonight. Some of that snow could come from a “second wave” after 6 p.m. tonight that will dump a majority of snow southeast of the Kansas Turnpike, he said.
Rain and sleet were first reported in Wichita at 7:10 p.m. Tuesday. At 9:55 p.m., the NWS said it had transitioned to mainly snow at the airport. Tuesday measured 0.1 inches of snow.
