Kansas hunter thought he was shooting at a turkey. He shot a boy in the head, cops say

A 7-year-old boy was shot in the head when a Kansas hunter thought he was shooting at a turkey, but it turned out to be a decoy, officials said.

McPherson County Sheriff’s Capt. Doug Anderson said in a statement that the hunting accident happened shortly before 5 p.m. on Saturday. The boy had been hunting with his parents about 3 miles south and half a mile east of Roxbury.

“Another adult male hunter unaware of the family in the area shot at what he thought was a turkey but was a decoy and struck the 7-year-old boy in the head,” Anderson said.

The child was airlifted to Wesley Medical Center. Anderson said he is supposed to be released from intensive care on Monday and is “apparently doing pretty good.”

The sheriff’s office said all individuals involved have cooperated with the investigation, which is ongoing.
