Toddlers found unconscious in closet during Wichita fire. Woman faces charges
Prosecutors have charged a Wichita woman with two counts of child endangerment in connection with an apartment fire that harmed two toddlers last month.
Tyana K. Kreie, 26, remained in the Sedgwick County Jail on Wednesday, following her April 23 arrest. Her bond is $50,000. She made her first appearance in Sedgwick County District Court on April 24 and has another hearing scheduled for May 4, court records show.
The children were found unresponsive in a closet of an apartment at River Walk Apartments, 2701 S. Emporia, around 1 a.m. on March 18. They were hospitalized in critical condition and treated for smoke inhalation. Authorities have said the woman who lived in the apartment woke up when she smelled something burning and found the unconscious children while looking for the source of the odor.
The children were taken into police protective custody, authorities said previously.
The complaint filed by prosecutors alleges Kreie “unlawfully and recklessly” caused or allowed the children to be in a situation where their “life, body or health is endangered and bodily harm was inflicted.”
An attorney appointed to represent Kreie did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
River Walk Apartments is near Pawnee and Broadway.
