Second child dies in shooting by child in Ellsworth County

An 8-year-old died from his injuries sustained in a shooting from another child last week in Ellsworth County, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

This is the second child to die in the shooting. The other, who was 5-years-old, died at the scene of the shooting, at a home outside of Brookville south of the intersection of Kansas Highway 141 and Avenue N.

Brookville is about a 100 miles north of Wichita.

The shooting happened after a young child picked up a loaded, unsecured shotgun and fired it, striking the 5-year-old girl and her 8-year-old brother, the state law enforcement agency said.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
