Wichita police say a 59-year-old homeless man died Sunday after he fell onto a road and was hit by a car.

A preliminary investigation into Eugene Favart’s death indicates he had been walking on a sidewalk before stumbling into the street, police spokesman Officer Brad Wright said.

“The driver of a Hyundai Elantra ... did not see the victim in the roadway and accidentally hit him,” Wright said by email.

The collision happened around 1:30 a.m. Sunday in the 4800 block of West Central, near Anna between Hoover and West Street.

Police don’t know how long Favart laid on the road before the car struck him.

Wright said the man driving the Hyundai “remained at the scene and is fully cooperating with investigators. There are no signs of impairment suspected at this time.”

“This remains an active and ongoing investigation,” he added.
