Wichita man jailed on suspicion of child abuse after 4-year-old dies
Police say a 34-year-old Wichita man has been booked into jail on suspicion of child abuse after a 4-year-old became unresponsive and died Monday afternoon.
“Further charges could be added pending the Medical Examiners autopsy report,” Wichita police spokesman Officer Rick Pena said by email.
Officers responded to a medical call about an unresponsive 4-year-old child around 3:21 p.m. Monday in the 2600 block of South Topeka, near Pawnee and Broadway.
Pena said the child was taken to a Wichita hospital in critical condition and was pronounced dead at 4:07 p.m. Monday.
He described the 34-year-old man as “an acquaintance of the (child’s) mother.” The Eagle does not name suspects accused of crimes unless they are formally charged in court.
The child’s name was not released.
“This remains an active and ongoing investigation,” Pena said.
