A Wichita mother involved in a courtroom brawl at the sentencing hearing for her son’s killer earlier this year pleaded guilty as charged Wednesday to one count of disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor.
Jeanette L. Dees was immediately sentenced to 30 days of non-reporting probation plus five days in jail, court records show. The jail sanction can be broken up into a two-day stay and a three-day stay, and her probation will end after she serves the time. Any court costs and fees she owes must be paid within 90 days, according to court records.
She has to serve the five-day jail sanction by Oct. 17.
Prosecutors charged Dees with disorderly conduct after a fight started in the courtroom gallery among people attending Te’Bryis Robinson’s sentencing hearing on April 8. Dees was giving an emotional statement about why Robinson should receive the maximum sentence for murdering her 14-year-old son, TrenJ’vious Hutton, inside Towne East Square mall in 2022 when the brawl started.
Authorities have said people who were sitting with Hutton’s family on one side of the courtroom became upset during her speech, got up and went to the area where Robinson’s supporters were seated after someone made a comment. Deputies had to break up the fight.
Dees was accused of “using fighting words or engaging in noisy conduct likely to arouse alarm, anger or resentment in others” in violation of state law, authorities have said.
At least five other people, including some of Dees’ other children, were also charged, authorities said.
Derrick E. Parker Jr., Trentez J. Hutton and Trentasia Hutton each pleaded guilty on Aug. 15 to one count of disorderly conduct and were each sentenced to five days in jail plus payment of court costs and fees within 90 days, court records show. Trentavies Hutton pleaded guilty on Sept. 11 to one count of disorderly conduct and was sentenced to 30 days of non-reporting probation plus five consecutive days in jail and payment of court costs and fees within 90 days. A 16-year-old boy received probation after pleading no contest on May 21 to one count of disorderly conduct.
All of their disorderly conduct charges accused them of brawling or fighting, according to court records.
Robinson, 20, was sentenced to 21 years in prison on April 8 after pleading no contest to second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder and aggravated battery in connection with the March 18, 2022, mall shooting. Authorities have said he killed the teenager after a fistfight among a group of teens near the food court.
