A Wichita woman died and a Missouri man was seriously injured in a shooting, chase and crash on Wednesday morning.

At around 10:30 a.m., Butler County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call of a person being shot in the area of K-254 and Shumway Road, west of El Dorado. A 44-year-old man from Blue Springs, Missouri, had been shot, a news release from the Butler County Sheriff’s Office said.

The man was taken to a Wichita hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

“The man was able to provide the identity of the woman who allegedly shot him,” the release added.

The suspect, a Wichita woman in her sixties, left the scene of the shooting in the man’s 2008 Ford F-150 before police arrived, the release said.

A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper spotted the pickup truck near K-254 and Greenwich and tried to make a traffic stop. The truck fled and a chase ensued, a KHP news release said.

At around 10:46 a.m., the trooper performed a tactical vehicle intervention in the 5300 block of N. Webb Road. A tactical vehicle intervention is a technique used by law enforcement to force a fleeing vehicle to abruptly turn 180 degrees, causing the vehicle to stall and stop, according to the U.S. Office of Justice Programs.

The pickup struck a sign in the parking lot of a business at 5039 N. Webb Road, the release said.

“As a result of the collision, the shooting suspect, the woman driving the F-150, was pronounced deceased at the scene,” the Butler County Sheriff’s Office said.

No other injuries were reported.

The Butler County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate what led to the shooting.
