Kansas health officials are warning people not to enter Polecat Creek and the confluence of Clear Creek south of Garden Plain because of the risk of bacteria.

The Kansas Department of Health issued a stream advisory Wednesday for both creeks after thunderstorms caused a power outage due at the city of Garden Plain’s wastewater plant.

The plant experienced a down burst from the storms and the power was out until 11 a.m., said Garden Plain city clerk Kimberly McCormick.

“The advisory has been issued because potential elevated bacteria and contaminants may be present in Polecat Creek and the confluence of Clear Creek, located just south of Garden Plain,” a news release from KDHE said. “If you live or have activities near this stream, do not enter the stream or allow children or pets to enter.”

The city of Garden Plain is working to repair the problem. KDHE will rescind the advisory after the disinfection system is operating again.
