Two people hospitalized after Wichita police chase involving a motorcycle, official says

A police chase Thursday night in Wichita ended with a fleeing motorcyclist hitting a man on a bicycle, injuring them both, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The accident happened on Douglas at Chautauqua, which is close to Hillside. Around 7:16 p.m., police tried to stop 27-year-old Chase Ash-Carson of Wichita who was speeding on a Honda motorcycle while headed west on Douglas, according to the KHP crash log.

Ash-Carson “veered left to avoid the bicyclist,” a 59-year-old Wichita man crossing Douglas at Chautauqua, but ended up hitting the bicycle, the crash log said. The motorcycle then slid into the back of a vehicle parked on the north side of the street.

Ash-Carson was taken to nearby Wesley Medical Center with suspected serious injuries. The bicyclist was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Both were in stable condition Friday afternoon, according to Wesley spokesperson Dave Stewart.

It’s unclear why the KHP investigated the crash. It’s not uncommon to have an outside agency investigate incidents involving an officer.
