Officers identify two people killed in high-speed accident near Wichita/Haysville border
Officers on Friday identified the two people killed in a three-vehicle accident that happened Thursday after one driver reportedly drove over 100 mph in a 45 mph zone.
The accident happened around 9:42 a.m. near 63rd Street South and Southern, which is just east of Seneca and along the Wichita/Haysville border.
Justin Newby, 33, of Derby and Ramona Blizzard, 91, of Wichita died at the scene.
Newby, who a witness said was driving over 100 mph, was headed west on 63rd Street South in a Chevrolet Venture minivan when he went into the eastbound lane and hit Blizzard, who was driving a Toyota Avalon car, head-on, according to Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Benjamin Blick.
Blick said the accident happened just after Newby crossed over the railroad tracks, which would have obstructed visibility on the other side. After hitting Blizzard, Newby then rear-ended a Chevrolet Silverado truck in the westbound lane. The Haysville couple in the truck, a 70-year-old woman driving and a 63-year-old man in the passenger seat, had minor injuries.
All three vehicles came to rest in the south ditch, with the minivan ending up on its side next to the pickup, Blick said.
“The circumstances of the collision are under investigation,” Blick said.
