Probation for teen involved in street race that hurt boy, 9, in south Wichita
One of two Wichita teenagers who hit a 9-year-old boy crossing the street while they were racing their trucks in the 2700 block of South Meridian last spring will serve six months of probation after pleading no contest to one count of aggravated battery, according to court records and the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.
The teen, whom The Eagle is not naming because his case was adjudicated in juvenile court, was sentenced April 5. He was 16 at the time of the collision. He entered the no-contest plea in February, court records show.
The other teen, who was 17 when the boy was hurt, on April 6 entered a no-contest plea to one count of aggravated battery. He is also expected to receive probation when he is sentenced on May 31, according to his plea agreement.
Police have said the 9-year-old boy was hit by one of the speeding trucks as he ran across Meridian around 7:30 p.m. on March 31, 2021. Other traffic had stopped to let the boy and another child cross.
The boy, who was thrown into a ditch after being struck, suffered serious injuries but survived, The Eagle previously reported.
Witnesses, including two Wichita police officers, saw the trucks racing before the collision and then leave the scene afterward, court records show. The teens were later arrested at their homes.
