Pit bull owner shot in rear end after his loose dog attacked puppy, Wichita police say

Update, 2 p.m. Thursday:

A loose pit bull attacked a puppy, leading the puppy’s owner to shoot the attacking dog and its owner, Wichita police said.

Police were called at around 12:08 p.m. Wednesday to a report of a disturbance with shots fired at a home in the 2800 block of East Mossman. Officer Charley Davidson said in a news release that first responders heard shots being fired, then saw a man run to a silver Jeep and leave.

They stopped the vehicle and found a 31-year-old man who had been shot in his rear end, Davidson said. The man was taken to a hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening injury.

Investigators determined the man’s pit bull had escaped from the yard at the man’s home in the 800 block of North Green. A 59-year-old man who also lives there followed the loose dog a couple of blocks to the home on Mossman, near Ninth and Grove.

There, the pit bull attacked a Rottweiler puppy, Davidson said. The 42-year-old woman who lives at the home fired a handgun at the pit bull attacking her dog. The pit bull was struck, causing minor injuries.

The 59-year-old man took the pit bull back home and told the 31-year-old man about the shooting. The dog owner drove a tan Ford Escape to the home where the shooting happened. The ensuing disturbance involved his Escape being rammed and the 42-year-old puppy owner shooting the 31-year-old owner of the pit bull, Davidson said.

The man then got into the Jeep with his friends and roommates, who had followed him.

The investigation is ongoing, and police reports show no arrests have been made. Police ask anyone with information on the case to call WPD detectives at 316-268-4407, Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111 or the See Something Say Something hot line at 316-519-2282.
