Convicted of child sex crimes, former Kansas police officer loses license to be a cop
A former Kansas police officer who has been sentenced to life in prison for child sex crimes has had his law enforcement certification revoked.
Douglas Heit, 51, of Garden City, had his certification revoked earlier this month by the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training, or KSCPOST. He was employed by the Garden City Police Department as a patrol officer and an evidence technician between July 2003 and August 2018.
Heit pleaded no contest in October in Finney County District Court to two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child younger than 14. He was sentenced in December to two concurrent terms of life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years. He is also subject to lifetime post-release supervision and sex offender registration.
As of Sunday, Heit does not appear on the Kansas Bureau of Investigation sex offender registry. Kansas Department of Corrections records show Heit has been held out of state since March.
The Kansas Attorney General’s office prosecuted the Jessica’s Law charges, and the case was investigated by the KBI and local police. The crimes happened in August 2018.
