Former Kansas police officer headed to prison for child sex crimes

A former Garden City police officer will be serving a life sentence for aggravated indecent liberties with a child.

Douglas Heit, 50, was sentenced Thursday by Finney County District Judge Michael Quint. Heit won’t be eligible for parole for 25 years, according to the Kansas Attorney General’s Office. The attorney general says Heit pleaded no contest in October to two identical counts involving a child under the age of 14.

“Heit is also subject to lifetime post-release supervision and sex offender registration,” a news release from the attorney general says. The crimes occurred in August 2018.

Heit was employed with the Garden City Police Department from July 2003 to August 2018, according to the city’s human resource department. He went from patrol to an evidence technician, and was not terminated.
