Wichita police traffic unit patrolling Kellogg, ticketing speeders and bad drivers

A little more than a week after the coronavirus stay-at-home order was lifted, Wichita police will be increasing patrols along a major highway in response to car accidents.

Wichita Police Chief Gordon Ramsay said the department’s traffic unit will target speeders and bad drivers along Kellogg, also known as U.S. 54 and U.S. 400 in the city limits. The announcement was made in a Facebook Live video Tuesday night.

Ramsay said there are clear problem areas for wrecks, and a map displayed in the video circled Kellogg intersections at Ridge, Seneca, Broadway, Hillside and Rock. The intersection of Pawnee and Seneca in southwest Wichita was also circled.

“As a result of the traffic crashes and the clearly problem areas that exist from one end of the city to the other on that Kellogg corridor, we are deploying our traffic unit in those areas, that will be writing tickets for excessive speed, unsafe turns and red light violations, because those are the main causes of crashes,” Ramsay said.

“We want you to be safe on the streets so you can get home to your family. That involves following the rules of the road and being courteous to others. We have seen an increase in road rage incidents in the last couple years, and we just need to be patient with one another and be kind on the roads.”
